Visiting artist Lucy Austin, gave us a presentation about her work. Lucy Austin is originally from Yorkshire, but is now based in Bristol. Lucy has worked from the same studio for more than twenty years in Easton (Bristol). The studio itself has no heating and is situated in an old industrial building, but this makes it cheap to rent. Lucy, through trial a error has developed her own type of abstraction, which use everyday items like toothpaste boxes and other recycled items to make her print images, which she then overlays with paint techniques. The work is interesting to look at as it is a good mix of drawing, collage and painting. I really like her work, it is very inspiring and an excellent example of abstract artwork.

Here are a couple of examples of her work.

She has shown her work nationally and has been selected for several prestigious awards:
The Jerwood Drawing Prize (2007/08/10)
The Sunday Times Watercolour Competition (2014/15)
The Summer Exhibition at The Royal Academy, London (2014/20/22)
The Contemporary British Painting Prize (2018)
Gallery showings include:
Huddersfield Art Gallery
The Menier Gallery, London
Maidstone Museum & Art Gallery
Bideford Art Gallery
The Oriel Art Gallery in Antrim, Northern Ireland.

One of the most informative pieces of information that inspired my was how to photograph work to submit to the RWA open exhibition: Do not photograph your work in a garden setting. Always photograph it (for submission) on a plain white background. This is good to know as I'm fairly sure each of my submission photos have not been in the correct format.
