The Making of a Zine

Our tutor Ronnie spent time with us making a Zine.  Now I have to admit up until this point I had no idea what on earth a Zine was.  Ronnie then asked if we had heard of a Fanzine which of course I had Zines (pronounced Zeens) credit their origin to the 1930's and 1940's with the creation of a self published, short magazine by science-fiction fans to discuss the content they loved. These fan-made zines became again became widely popular in the 60s and 70s, greatly increasing visibility of the zine format and in fact I remember some friends in around 1988 creating a Zine surrounding the ideas of Dungeons and Dragons.

We first started by selecting some photos of our work and writing some explanation of our interests and practices. These images and script we then printed.  I decided to do something on Jesmonite, which is a product that I have never actually used but am keen to get familiar with the process. We proceeded to stick it onto a A3 sheet of paper, which had been folded it three times to make eight separate panels.  When this was achieved we photocopied the sheet.

This is what it looked like when the information was stuck onto the paper.

Putting the original sheet through the photocopier, Ronnie assisting here, I photocopied the item in black and white and then cyan. The two were then combined and the Zine was cut down the middle of the sheet and folded, using the 'front' page as the guide.
